MEN’S BASKETBALL: Cavaliers Erase Halftime Deficit, Fall Late in Region XIV Tournament

BAYTOWN, Texas — The Bossier Parish Community College Cavaliers erased a double-digit halftime deficit and took control in the second half, pushing Angelina College to the final minutes before the Roadrunners secured a 69–62 win in the opening round of the NJCAA Region XIV Tournament Tuesday night. Facing the nation’s top-ranked defensive team, BPCC refused to back down. Angelina held a 39–26 lead at halftime, but the Cavaliers regrouped after the break and steadily chipped away at the deficit, outscoring the Roadrunners by six points in the second half. BPCC eventually surged ahead in the second half, putting the Roadrunners under pressure before Angelina regained control in the closing minutes to end the Cavaliers’ tournament run.

Four BPCC players finished in double figures. Tony Montgomery led the Cavaliers with 17 points, six rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Zequan Lewis added 15 points and four rebounds, while Mazin Lumori contributed 12 points and three rebounds. Dustin Welch recorded 11 points and five rebounds.

Head Coach Jeff Moore said the team’s response in the second half reflected the resilience and competitiveness of the group.

“Things weren’t going our way in the first half which led to us being down 13 at halftime,” Moore said. “We settled down and battled back to take an eight-point lead with five minutes left in the game. Unfortunately, Angelina made the plays and we struggled late which resulted in a tough loss in the region tournament.”

The Cavaliers close the 2025–26 season with an overall record of 11–20. In his first season leading the program, Moore emphasized the growth of a young roster that included 11 freshmen among the team’s 15 players.

“This has been a great group of young men to coach,” Moore said. “They always responded to challenges and have represented BPCC, our program, themselves, and their families in a first-class manner.”
