Men’s Basketball: BPCC Honors Sophomores, Battles Blinn in Regular-Season Home Finale

BOSSIER CITY, La. – Before the opening tip Saturday afternoon, the spotlight belonged to Bossier Parish Community College’s sophomores — Stafford Bailey, Cooper Childers and Mazin Lumori. One by one, they were called to center court and greeted by applause and cheers from fans inside the Coach Billy Montgomery Gymnasium.

That pregame energy carried the Cavaliers well into the first half as they pushed the tempo early and built a quick lead. Even as the Buccaneers of Blinn College responded, BPCC stayed aggressive in what evolved into a tightly contested battle. The Cavaliers trailed by just one, 39-38, at halftime. BPCC delivered a strong second-half performance, trading the lead with Blinn in a tightly contested matchup. With the score tied late, Blinn took the lead with under two minutes remaining and capitalized down the stretch to secure the 87-79 victory.

Tony Montgomery led the Cavaliers with 29 points, shooting 63% from the field, while adding seven assists and four rebounds. Drew Cooper contributed 18 points and four rebounds. Dustin Welch finished with 14 points, knocking down four 3-pointers and pulling down six rebounds. Mazin Lumori added eight points and eight rebounds.

Head coach Jeff Moore said he was proud of his team’s effort against one of the top teams in the region.

“I thought offensively we played really well again, going 52% from the field (31 of 60) and 48% from three-point range (13 of 27),” Moore said. “We just weren’t able to get to the free-throw line tonight, attempting only six free throws in the game. Blinn made the plays in the last two minutes of a tied game, capitalizing off our turnovers down the stretch. We hit the road next week for two games, and I expect our team to come out and compete like we have these last two games.”

BPCC moves to 10-18 overall and 4-16 in Region XIV play. The Cavaliers will close out the regular season on the road, traveling to Lee College on Wednesday and Coastal Bend College on Saturday. Visit www.bpcc.edu/athletics for game schedules, tickets, and updates all season long.
